Watch the video clip: What is the Pure Online workshop? Arm yourself to battle temptation by spending time with God daily.
It is imperative that we look to God for our strength and wisdom by devoting time
to scripture study and prayer every day. King David knew the importance of spending daily time with God and made it a priority in his life. David states, "In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation." Psalm 5:3 (New International Version). Jesus also set the example for us concerning spending quiet time with God. He
regularly spent time with God, as the following verses tell us: "Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, 'Sit here while I go over there and pray'" (Matthew 26:36); and "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed (Mark 1:35). Why is daily scripture reading and prayer so crucial? Jesus said, "If you love me,
keep my commandments." (John 14:15) In order to love Him and to keep His commandments, I must first know him. Through devotion (the daily reading of scripture and prayer) I learn more about God and begin to know Him better. If I know Him, then I will love Him. If I love Him, then I will obey Him. Most of us, as Christians, recognize that when we are faithfully studying the word
and in prayer on a daily basis, then we are more obedient throughout the day and more aware of God's purpose for our lives. Obedience to God takes precedence. When we neglect daily devotion, other things in life take precedence, and we begin to depend on our own thinking. Life seems unmanageable, and we are far more susceptible to temptation. It is also amazing how quickly we forget to cry out to God when confronted by
trials and temptation. When Peter was sinking in the waves, he cried out — "Lord, save me!" — and was immediately rescued by the Lord (Matthew 14:30-31) (New International Version). Rest assured: God will deliver you from sinful habits if you fully trust Him and do not depend on your own understanding. This walk of faith is described in Proverbs 3:5-8: "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on
your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." Watch for another practical way to battle temptation – taking authority over your eyes - in our next Pure Connection newsletter. |
