Q. What is the difference between the iBoss and a router with parental controls?
The iBoss brings the same filtering technology used only available to top fortune 500 companies to the home. With the iBoss, there is no need to enter all the sites you wish to block. Plug it in, pick the categories and/or applications you wish you block and you are done.

Q. Why is the iBoss Hardware versus being Software?
There are several advantages to hardware. First, they are operating system independent so you will have no potential conflict with your current software on your computers. It is also harder to get around because all Internet traffic has to go through the iBoss which you have control over.

Q. Is the iBoss more cost effective than Software parental controls?
Yes. The iBoss is cost effective since you can control your entire network with one device and subscription. It can filter all of the computers on your network with only one subscription rather than paying for a per computer basis.

Q. I don't know much about computers, will I be able to easily use and configure the iBoss?
Yes. The iBoss is extremely easy to use and requires very little knowledge of computers. There is no software to install, and no long, confusing manuals to read. You can be up and running with an iBoss in no time at all. The configuration screens are user-friendly, and the wizard screens are simple to navigate through.

Q. Will the iBoss slow down my computer?
No. The iBoss was designed as a stand-alone device that operates outside of your computer. With advanced processing done in hardware, the iBoss™ will not slow down your computer.

Q. Does the iBoss work with Dial-up Internet services?
The iBoss cannot be connected directly to a dial-up modem, since only RJ45 Ethernet jacks are provided. However, there are third party products available that allow connectivity between a dial-up phone connection and an ethernet-enabled device such as the iBoss. One such product is the WiFlyer which is available from AlwaysOnWireless (Not associated with Phantom Technologies LLC in any way).

Q. Will the iBoss slow down my network connection to the Internet?
The iBoss uses patent pending technology that allows for network speeds to be maintained. Unlike other filters, the iBoss inspects only small parts of the data going through it taking only what it needs to determine the URL that the package is trying to get to. Using its powerful hardware processor, network speeds are almost identical than that running without the iBoss. Also consider that computer speeds will be untouched compared to software filters that can slow down a computers speed due to the processing power they require and there interaction with the operating system.

Q. Will the iBoss filtering work with the AOL browser?

Since the AOL browser tunnels and routes all Internet traffic to their servers, the iBoss will not be able to filter the network packets that are run through it correctly. This is because AOL uses a proprietary protocol to connect to their servers. In addition, you will not be able to log into the iBoss using the AOL browser. We recommend using Internet Explorer or Firefox. To resolve this issue, you may block the AOL browser from going out for the requests and use an alternative web browser. You can do this by blocking the port number used by the AOL browser (5190) within the iBoss custom port blocking section.

Q. Why is there a subscription?
The web is an ever changing place. New websites are added daily. Phantom Technologies maintains a database in which the iBoss communicates with to update itself with all these new sites and old sites to determine what category they fall under. The subscription ensures you have the latest up to the minute sites on the web and are categorized instantly when a user attempts to reach that site. Since this is an ongoing process, the subscription is needed to maintain these updates.
Q. Will the iBoss work without the subscription?
The filtering of content will not work without a subscription. The wireless and router functions will work without the subscriptions but you will not be able to use the parental control functions of the device without an active subscription. This is because the iBoss needs to constantly be connected to the Phantom Technologies database and only achieved with an active subscription.

Q. I know the iBoss uses a central URL database to update and blocks sites by categories, but can I set my own sites to block or allow?

Yes. The iBoss will allow you to set different sites to be blocked or allowed on top of the category blocking. You can add a custom site to be blocked or allowed that is not blocked or blocked by the iBoss.

Q. Can I use the iBoss to block all websites except for the ones that I approve of?

Yes. The iBoss will allow you to block all websites except for ones that you add to a list of allowed sites.

Q. Can I set different scheduling for the different categories with the iBoss?

Yes. The iBoss will allow you to set advanced schedules for the different categories that are blocked. You may always block one category and have another on a set schedule.

Q. Can the iBoss set different filtering rules for the different computers on my network?

Yes. The iBoss will allow you to have 3 different filtering groups with different set of rules. You will be able to identify multiple computers and specify which filtering group you would like the computer to be filtered by or if you do not want any filtering set for certain computers. This is useful for setting different rules for different specified computers. You may name the filtering groups to better remember what rules you have set for them (ex: Parents, Teens, Kids, etc.) and set the identified computers to these set of rules or bypass filtering all together.

Q. I have both Mac and Windows computers on my network. Will I be able to use the iBoss with both operating systems?

Yes. Since the iBoss™ Home is a hardware-based product, it is compatible with virtually any operating system that has networking support.

Q. Can I replace my existing wireless firewall/router with the iBoss?

Yes. The iBoss functions as a full Wireless-N router as well as an Internet content filter. The iBoss™ Home provides a powerful SPI Firewall that is ready to use right out of the box. There is no software to install, and no complicated setup procedures to follow. Just plug in your iBoss and your network will be instantly locked-down and protected. It provides a 4 port switch and Wireless-N signal.

Q. Is there software that I have to install on the computers for the filter to work?

No. The iBoss does not have any software to install. It is a hardware device that works on your network. The configuration is done through a web browser connected to the iBoss interface.

Q. Can the iBoss even filter traffic for wireless computers?

Yes. The iBoss supports wired as well as wireless computers. It has a built-in Wireless-N signal which users can connect wirelessly to the home network. These computers connected wirelessly will also be filtered by the iBoss.
